Delaware chickens were started in 1940 by George Ellis of Delaware
(hence the name). The breed is a combination of Barred Plymouth
Rock and New Hampshires. Delaware chickens were popular in parts of
the east coast for a number of years, but eventually were pushed
aside to make way for the Cornish Cross, which was a better
commerical chicken breed.
It has well-developed egg and meat qualities, and a calm and
friendly disposition. The breed is noted for rapid growth and fast
feathering of the chicks. Cocks grow to 8 pounds and hens to 6
pounds.
